It is interesting. Other commentators have compared senior university executives to senior record industry executives ten years ago.

@Clinical Cases and Images – Blog
I'm glad that you've had that experience. I have heard other accounts where staff have received support for online educational projects but in general my experience has been that these often haven't counted for much when it comes to internal promotion.
Thank you for the links. They are very useful.

Fascinating! Is it not peculiarly paradoxical that these institutions that are meant to preparing our young people for productive careers in the real contemporary world have so little clue about real or contemporary? Good to see that some are overcoming this traditional ivory tower attitude!

Excellent summary. However, I can't agree completely with the statement below:

"... there is no immediate benefit in terms of promotion or recognition by the institution. Although an academic staff member’s reputation amongst his or her discipline peers may be enhanced through active web publishing and engagement in social networks this is generally not recognized by the employer."

During my work as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, the online educational projects I was leading were met with support and a lot of curiosity.

I elaborated on some of the early aspects of Web 2.0 use in academia in 2006:

Becoming a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Web 2.0 Projects

Using a Blog to Build an Educational Portfolio

Things have developed quite a lot since then.
